Migrate from Sophos Anti-Virus for Linux
Sophos Anti-Virus for Linux is not supported after July 20 2023. We recommend that you migrate your Linux devices to Sophos Protection for Linux.
How to migrate
To migrate, you need to download the Sophos Protection for Linux installer in Sophos Central. You can then use this to migrate your devices. You must also uninstall Sophos Anti-Virus for Linux.
After migration, you must configure your server threat protection policies to turn on real-time scanning. Specifically, you must turn on Enable scan for Server Protection for Linux Agent, which is turned off by default.
Download the installer
To download the installer, do as follows:
- Go to Devices > Installers.
- Click Download Linux Server Installer.
Uninstall SAV and migrate your Linux device
This removes Sophos Anti-Virus at the same time that you install Sophos Protection for Linux. We recommend this approach because it reduces the length of time that your device is unprotected. If you prefer, you can uninstall Sophos Anti-Virus before you migrate. See Uninstall SAV and migrate later.
To migrate your Linux device, do as follows:
- Locate the installer on the Linux device.
-
Change the file permissions to include “execute”.
chmod +x SophosSetup.sh
-
Run the installer.
./SophosSetup.sh --uninstall-sav
If you're not signed in as root, run the installer with the
sudo
command.sudo ./SophosSetup.sh --uninstall-sav
Tip
Linux devices already managed by Sophos Central are added to the same policy group they belonged to when protected by Sophos Anti-Virus. You can use the
--group
option to add your device to a specific group in Sophos Central. See Installer command-line options for Linux. -
When the installation is complete, in Sophos Central, go to My Products > Server > Servers to check that the device is protected.
Uninstall SAV and migrate later
If you want to uninstall Sophos Anti-Virus for Linux before you migrate, do as follows:
- Go to
/opt/sophos-av
. - Run
uninstall.sh
. - Download and run the installer when you want to migrate.
- For Linux devices previously managed by Sophos Central, sign in to Sophos Central, go to My Products > Server > Servers. There are two entries for your device. Delete the entry that has "Anti-Virus for Linux" in the Protection column.
After migration
After you've migrated to Sophos Protection for Linux, do as follows:
- Check that all your migrated Linux devices are in the correct server groups.
- Run an on-demand scan. See Scans.
- Check your server threat protection policies. Make sure you've turned on Enable scan for Server Protection for Linux Agent. This setting is turned off by default. See Real-time Scanning - Local Files and Network Shares.
- Test detection features. See How to test Sophos Protection for Linux detection features.
